Mission & Vision
Creating Volunteering experiences that connect people throughout Africa

Impact Volunteers Africa was founded by Vivienne van Zyl with a clear vision to connect passionate individuals with meaningful, ethical volunteer opportunities across Africa. We specialise in placing volunteers within carefully selected wildlife and marine conservation programmes, where they can actively contribute to real research and impactful conservation work. Our focus is not only on participation, but on purpose, ensuring that every placement creates genuine value for both the environment and the volunteer.
Our vision is a future where responsible volunteering directly contributes to protecting Africa’s ecosystems while empowering local organisations and communities doing the work on the ground.

Our Impact

Our Journey
How We Source Projects

Our mission is simple yet powerful:
to connect people with ethical, hands-on conservation experiences that make a lasting difference.
We partner with trusted, vetted projects across Africa that are actively involved in conservation research and environmental protection. This ensures that every volunteer experience is responsible, sustainable, and truly impactful.
Impact Volunteers Africa was born from firsthand experience. While working as a dive instructor on a marine conservation project, Vivienne witnessed the profound impact these programmes have, not only on ecosystems, but on the individuals involved. She saw how people from all backgrounds, even without formal qualifications, were able to contribute meaningfully, develop new skills, and grow through immersive, hands-on experiences in fields they are passionate about.
As a boutique and dedicated organisation, we pride ourselves on offering a highly personalised approach. From the first enquiry to programme completion, we are committed to guiding and supporting our volunteers every step of the way, ensuring they feel confident, prepared, and inspired throughout their journey.
At Impact Volunteers Africa, we believe that anyone can make a difference.
Through meaningful travel, we create opportunities for individuals to gain valuable skills, build unforgettable experiences, and develop a deeper connection with the natural world.
Because when travel has purpose, it creates impact for both the planet and the people who explore it.
Foundation
We partner directly with established conservation and community organisations across Africa. Each project is carefully reviewed before inclusion to ensure it is ethical, structured, and genuinely impactful.
Volunteering in nature and conservation projects across Africa is more than just travel — it is an opportunity to be part of something meaningful, impactful, and deeply rewarding.
At Impact Volunteers Africa, we believe that volunteering should benefit both the individual and the environment. By joining one of our programs, you become part of a bigger purpose — contributing to the protection of wildlife, marine ecosystems, and local communities while gaining experiences that stay with you for life.
Volunteers play an important role in supporting ongoing conservation and research efforts. Whether assisting with wildlife monitoring, marine data collection, or environmental initiatives, your contribution helps support projects that are working toward long-term sustainability and protection of Africa’s natural heritage.
Volunteering challenges you in the best way possible. It allows you to step out of your comfort zone, develop new skills, and gain hands-on experience in fields such as conservation and research — even if you don’t have prior qualifications. Many volunteers leave with increased confidence, new perspectives, and a clearer sense of purpose.
This is not passive travel. You will actively participate in day-to-day project work, gaining practical experience and a deeper understanding of the environments and species you are helping to protect.
We work with carefully selected projects that focus on ethical, sustainable practices. This ensures that your time and effort contribute to long-term positive outcomes for both the environment and local communities.
Spending time in nature creates a deeper appreciation for the environment and the challenges it faces. Volunteers often return home with a stronger connection to nature and a lasting commitment to conservation.
Volunteering also offers the opportunity to connect with local communities, learn about different cultures, and contribute in a way that supports and respects local economies and ways of life. Volunteering is not just about giving back — it’s about growing, learning, and becoming part of a global effort to protect our planet
